Tools for Student Agency in Learning:
Voice, Choice and Ownership

We provide practical, school-based examples that help school communities deepen their understanding of student voice, agency and leadership within Guided Inquiry units of work.

We explore how teachers can intentionally design learning that empowers students with the will, the environment and the power to act. This means creating opportunities for learners to ask questions, make meaningful choices, pursue curiosity and take increasing ownership of their learning.

Importantly, agency is not simply about having a voice or making choices. It is about empowering learners to use their learning, knowledge and skills to take purposeful action and make a difference in their classrooms, communities and world.
